Police are investigating a case in which 100 rounds of ammunition went missing from Daejeon Prison.
According to police and others on the 10th, Yuseong Police Station in Daejeon is currently investigating employee A, an ammunition manager at Daejeon Prison, after receiving a request for an investigation from the Ministry of Justice in early last month on suspicion of occupational embezzlement.
Through evidence such as the results of witness interviews with Ministry of Justice officials and officials at the ammunition supplier, and the obtained ammunition ledger records, police determined that 100 rounds of ammunition (9 mm pistol rounds) disappeared around 2020. The whereabouts of the missing ammunition have not been confirmed.
Police believe it is likely the ammunition was lost due to poor management rather than the responsible employee intentionally diverting it.
Seobuk Police Station in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, has also booked employee B at Cheonan Prison on suspicion of occupational embezzlement in connection with 40 rounds of ammunition that went missing there and is investigating. Police estimate that Cheonan Prison likewise lost the ammunition at least several years ago.
In June, during a comprehensive audit of Daejeon Prison, the Ministry of Justice discovered that the number of rounds was 100 fewer than recorded in the ledger and conducted a full inspection of correctional facilities nationwide. As a result, it was found that Cheonan Prison was also short by 40 rounds of 5.56 mm M16 ammunition compared with the ledger.
