Ten artillery shells, presumed to have been used during the Korean War, were found in succession at an elementary school construction site in Hongcheon County, Gangwon. The military collected all the shells, and the school sent all students home for safety.
According to the military and police on the 7th, at about 10:53 a.m. a worker at an elementary school in Seomyeon, Hongcheon County, discovered an artillery shell during construction and reported it to 112.
The discovered shells are presumed to be high-explosive shells used by the Korean military during the Korean War.
Responding to the report, the military checked the scene and determined there was no risk of explosion or suspicion of an air-defense threat. The explosive ordnance disposal unit (EOD) then collected all 10 shells at about 12:20 p.m.
As the shells were found one after another, the school, considering safety, sent the entire student body of about 20 students home after lunch.
The police and military plan to verify the exact type of the collected shells and how they were found, while also examining the possibility that additional shells may be buried around the construction site.
