A task force dedicated to police reform will launch next week. The Director General will lead it at the senior superintendent general level.
The Korean National Police Agency said in a media notice on the 6th that this is to keep the promise to fundamentally reform the police. It said it would explain the detailed organization and direction in line with the launch.
According to the Korean National Police Agency, Acting Commissioner General Kim Jong-cheol reviewed pending issues, including receiving briefings from agency executives for two days starting the previous day.
Acting Director Kim said it is important that frontline staff clearly recognize the changed investigative procedures and carry them out in the field, and instructed that all staff share information on the revised Criminal Procedure Act, which takes effect in Oct., and receive ample training in advance.
Acting Director Kim said that the field is crucial for the changed criminal justice system to take root, and told officials to review personnel systems so that talented personnel with capability and a sense of duty can continue working in investigative units without leaving.
He went on to say that officials must continuously check and shore up whether there are problems in each work system and any gaps in the command-and-supervision structure. He especially emphasized that across all police activities, efforts should not stop at crackdowns and investigations but should be organically linked to crime prevention, victim protection, and follow-up support.
