In next year's budget plan for the Ministry of Justice, 840 billion won is allocated for government compensation related to past affairs. That is five times this year's 144.8 billion won.
The Ministry of Justice on the 4th announced the "2027 budget and fund management plan (draft)." Next year's total expenditure for the Ministry of Justice will be 5.4056 trillion won, up 14.9% (701 billion won) from this year's 4.7046 trillion won.
There was no budget allocated this year to improve the environment of idle housing units to ease overcrowding in correctional facilities, but 12.9 billion won will be allocated next year. For the construction of new prison workshops to increase the number of people participating in work among those eligible for labor, 6.5 billion won will be invested, more than double this year's 3 billion won.
A total of 26 billion won will be invested to operate specialized juvenile protection agencies and to strengthen correctional education for juvenile offenders at high risk of reoffending.
A total of 10.8 billion won has been allocated to improve the guarding system that detects in real time signs of incidents such as suicide and death by illness inside correctional facilities. To expand one-to-one electronic monitoring and strengthen on-site supervision, 9.6 billion won will be invested.
A total of 1.6 billion won will be spent to build treatment and rehabilitation infrastructure for inmates with drug issues in correctional facilities and to strengthen drug testing for those on probation.
Government compensation for the prompt relief of victims of past affairs and other cases will be sharply expanded from 144.8 billion won this year to 840 billion won next year.
