Two people who were replacing a balcony safety railing at an apartment in Incheon fell 18 meters and died.
According to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's violent crime unit on the 3rd, at about 11:25 a.m. on the 2nd, the head of a window and door construction firm, identified as A, 68, and an employee, identified as B, 71, fell to the ground from the sixth-floor balcony of an apartment in Jakjeon-dong, Gyeyang District, Incheon.
Both were severely injured and transported to a hospital by 119 paramedics in cardiac arrest but ultimately died.
A and others were believed to have been in an accident while pulling up the newly installed railing, tied with ropes, from the first floor to the sixth floor after removing the existing steel safety railing.
Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, considering the possibility that the two fell together after failing to withstand the railing's weight.
The railing in question was more than 3 meters wide, making it difficult to move by elevator, it was found. Police are also looking into the possibility that A and others did not use a high-lift work vehicle (sky lift) to reduce expense.
The firm A ran was a small establishment, and B, the employee, was reportedly a relative.
Police plan to ask the National Forensic Service to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
