Jung Chang-seong, 31, a university lecturer who was arrested on charges of killing a Chinese female international student who took his class and mutilating and abandoning the body, was also found to have demanded a relationship from another Chinese female international student three years ago and, when rejected, pressured her by implying he could cause academic disadvantages.
According to MBC on the 2nd, Jung repeatedly approached A, a Chinese international student in the same department's master's program, while he was giving lectures on anatomy and rehabilitation therapy at a university in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, in Sept. 2023.
Jung expressed interest in A, who was taking his class at the time, less than a week after they met, but was rejected. It was determined that he continued to contact A afterward, saying things like "Let's have a meal" and "I will give you a gift."
When A kept refusing, Jung was said to have conveyed through another international student words to the effect that "I can delay your graduation or prevent you from graduating."
A said, "Jung Chang-seong told me, 'If you have any questions while writing your thesis, come to my house.'"
In Oct. 2023, Chinese female international students, including A, reported Jung to the university's Office of International Affairs. The university is said to have given Jung a verbal warning through an academic adviser at the time.
However, Jung was later known to have sent messages to international students saying, "If you stay with me, the professor will take better care of you."
Experts analyzed that Jung's behavior shows stalking characteristics of trying to control the other person by using his position.
Jung was arrested on the 25th of last month on charges of killing B, a 25-year-old Chinese female international student, at dawn on the 20th of last month in his studio apartment in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, mutilating the body, and abandoning it in wooded hills and a garbage dump in places including Gunpo, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang.
After the crime, Jung was found to have dressed as a woman, taken the victim's cellphone, and ridden a taxi to Dongdaegu Station. He was found to have then turned off the phone nearby, changed into his own clothes in a restroom, and gone home.
The next day, he was found to have even filed a false report with police claiming the victim was missing. Police believe he tried to disrupt the investigation by making it seem as if the victim disappeared on her own.
Police are checking whether there are additional victims at the university and plan to refer Jung to prosecutors after a supplementary investigation.
