A man who kicked the vehicle that former Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae was riding in has been sent to prosecutors.
Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul said on the 3rd that on the 1st it referred without detention a man in his 50s, identified as A, on suspicion of property damage.
A is accused of kicking and striking with a tool the vehicle of the former leader Jung around 7 p.m. on July 20 in front of the Democratic Party of Korea headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, after a joint briefing for the preliminary primary of the party convention to elect the party leader and Supreme Council members. Part of the vehicle was damaged, and there were no injuries.
After the incident, the former leader asked on social media (SNS), "Please impose severe punishment and thoroughly reveal any forces behind it."
Police said they forensically examined A's mobile phone to determine whether the crime was planned and whether there were any forces behind it, but concluded it was a spontaneous act because no suspicious circumstances were found.
Police said they "cannot confirm" specifics of the crime, including whether A is a member of a political party or supports a particular politician.
