A driver in their 30s who fled to avoid police responding to a report of suspected drunk driving was caught after ramming into 10 vehicles and a police officer in succession. Police fired four live rounds at the car's tires and then used a Taser to subdue the driver.
Daegu Gangbuk Police Station said on the 2nd it had taken into custody a person in their 30s, identified as A, on suspicion of interfering with special official duties and refusing a breath test under the Road Traffic Act, and is questioning the person.
A person in their 30s, identified as B, who was riding in the vehicle, was also arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting drunk driving.
According to police, around 2:03 a.m. that day near the Gukwoo Tunnel in Buk-gu, Daegu, A is suspected of causing a minor collision while driving a Mercedes-Benz and then fleeing without complying with officers' orders to get out.
Police responded to a citizen's report of suspected drunk driving and pursued A's vehicle, then surrounded it with patrol cars in front of A's residence and ordered A to get out.
But A again tried to flee and, in the process, rammed into eight parked vehicles and two patrol cars in succession. A police investigation found that A drove about 20 km from Jung-gu, Daegu, through the Gukwoo Tunnel in Buk-gu to the residence.
In the process, one officer was struck by the vehicle and suffered injuries including a femur fracture.
Police fired one blank round, then fired four live rounds at two front and rear tires of A's vehicle. After A got out of the car, officers fired a Taser to subdue the person and arrested A and the passenger, B, in the act.
Both A and B reportedly refused police breath tests.
Police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the case and then consider whether to seek arrest warrants for A and others.
