Kim Hyeong-jun, 26, the starting catcher for the NC Dinos and a former national team member, was summarily indicted on charges of failing to attend a reserve forces mobilization training.
According to legal sources on the 1st, the Criminal Division 1 of the Changwon District Prosecutors' Office Masan Branch on the 31st of last month summarily indicted Kim Hyeong-jun, who is accused of violating the Military Service Act, with a fine of 700,000 won. A summary indictment is a procedure in which prosecutors, instead of a formal trial, ask the court through a paper review to impose a fine or similar penalty.
Kim is accused of reading the mobilization training call-up notice scheduled for June 16 to 18 but not reporting for training. He was found to have played in his club's games during that period without filing a separate request to postpone the training.
Questioned as a suspect at Masan Dongbu Police Station in mid-last month, Kim was quoted as admitting the allegation, saying, "I forgot to apply to postpone the mobilization training and went ahead and played in the game." Police sent Kim to prosecutors without detention.
Kim debuted in the pros after being selected by NC in the second first round of the 2018 rookie draft. He joined the Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps (Sangmu) baseball team in 2021 and was discharged the following year. He played for the national team at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and won a gold medal, and he also played for the national team at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in March.
The NC club said the same day, "We have confirmed the prosecution's summary indictment regarding player Kim Hyeong-jun's failure to attend reserve training," adding, "Because reserve training notices are sent directly to individual players, we will take special care to ensure that players accurately check and carry out notifications and procedures related to themselves going forward."
