The identity of Zheng Changsheng, 31, a Chinese university lecturer who was arrested on charges of killing a Chinese female international student who attended his lecture and mutilating her body, has been made public.
North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency on the 1st posted suspect Zheng Changsheng's name, age, and facial photo on its website. The disclosure period for the identity information runs through Oct. 1.
Police said they convened the identity disclosure review committee on the previous day and, noting that "the brutality of the crime and the seriousness of the damage are recognized, and the evidence is sufficient," added that "taking into account the public interest, including crime prevention, we resolved to disclose the identity information."
Zheng Changsheng is accused of killing A, a 25-year-old Chinese female international student, at his residence on the 20th and mutilating the body before abandoning it in places including Gunpo, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang.
Zheng Changsheng is also suspected of filing a false missing-person report to disrupt the investigation and traveling to Dongdaegu Station while dressed as a woman to switch off the victim's cell phone.
Police applied five charges to Zheng Changsheng, including murder; destruction, abduction, and concealment of a corpse; and obstruction of official duties by deceit. Police plan to hand over Zheng Changsheng to prosecutors by the 4th.
