Overnight, torrential rain of up to 154 mm pounded the Jeolla region, centered on Gwangju in South Jeolla and North Jeolla.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, from midnight to 5 a.m. on the day, 154 mm of rain fell in Yeonggwang, Gwangju, South Jeolla.
At the same time, heavy rain also fell in Gunsan, North Jeolla (63 mm), Buan (61 mm), and Iksan (57.5 mm), as well as Nonsan, South Chungcheong (55 mm), and Wonju, Gangwon (53 mm).
The overnight rain caused a string of damages, including road and dwelling flooding and fallen trees. In Gwangju, South Jeolla, where heavy rain fell, there were 137 firefighting operations, and 87 in North Jeolla. Busan and South Gyeongsang had 37 and 34, respectively. There were no casualties.
As of 4 a.m. on the day, 10 national parks and 412 sections were closed for visitor safety due to worsening weather. Flights, trains, and passenger ferries were operating normally.
The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters said that with heavy rain warnings in effect for South Chungcheong and the Jeolla region, intense downpours of around 30 mm per hour were falling. It also said strong rain is expected through the afternoon, centered on North Jeolla, Chungcheong, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon.
