An active-duty police officer accused of handing over a victim's home address and other information to a man who sought private retaliation by asking for filth to be splashed at his ex-partner's home has been placed on standby.
The Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul said on the 31st that it recently placed its officer, identified as A, on standby after booking the officer on suspicion of violating the Personal Information Protection Act.
A is under investigation by the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul on suspicion of handing over personal information, including the home address of B's ex-partner, to B, a man in his 30s and an acquaintance.
A police official said, "We plan to determine whether to conduct an internal audit based on the results of the investigation."
B is suspected of commissioning a private retaliation firm in December last year to have filth splashed at the home of an ex-partner.
B is known to have passed on personal information, including the ex-partner's address obtained from A, to the retaliation firm.
Earlier, police sought an arrest warrant for B on charges including incitement of housebreaking, incitement of property damage, and violation of the Personal Information Protection Act, but prosecutors returned the request, calling for supplementary investigation.
Afterward, the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul supplemented its investigation into how the personal information was obtained and reapplied for an arrest warrant.
