A Maserati driver in his 40s, accused of causing a multi-vehicle crash while driving drunk in the Gangnam area of Seoul that killed a motorcycle rider, was arrested on the 30th.
Han Jeong-won, a duty judge for warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant after holding a pre-arrest detention hearing for a person surnamed Hwang on charges including causing death by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, saying there was a risk of flight.
At about 11:40 p.m. on the 27th, Hwang, allegedly driving a Maserati in a heavily intoxicated state on the road from Baengbaeng Sageori toward Nambu Bus Terminal Station in Seocho District, caused a six-vehicle pileup by crashing into one motorcycle ahead and five other vehicles including a bus and a taxi.
At the time of the crash, Hwang's blood alcohol level was found to be high enough for license revocation.
A delivery worker in his 40s who was riding the motorcycle was taken to a hospital in cardiac arrest and later died. Three others—a bus passenger, a taxi driver, and a pedestrian—suffered minor injuries.
Hwang was taken into emergency custody at the scene by police who responded to a report, and an arrest warrant was sought on the 29th.
Police who arrested Hwang plan to hand the case over to prosecutors after investigating the specific circumstances of the crash.
