The Korea Forest Service said it would raise the landslide risk alert for Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong, North Chungcheong, and North Jeolla from "attention" to "caution," effective at 2:30 p.m. on the 29th.
The move follows a forecast of rain in most parts of the country from today through the 31st. In particular, heavy downpours of 80 to 150 millimeters (more than 200 millimeters in some areas) are forecast for Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong, and 50 to 100 millimeters (more than 150 millimeters in some areas) for North Chungcheong and North Jeolla during vulnerable hours such as the early morning.
The landslide risk alert levels are divided into attention, caution, alert, and serious. Two provinces, including Gwangju in South Jeolla and South Gyeongsang, are maintaining the existing "caution" level.
Nine municipalities and provinces, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Ulsan, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, North Gyeongsang, and Jeju, remain at the existing "attention" level.
So far, no landslide damage has been identified in Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong.
An official at the Korea Forest Service said, "People in areas where heavy rain is forecast should refrain from outdoor activities around forests and avoid approaching dangerous areas such as landslide-prone zones," and added, "Pay close attention to evacuation guidance via emergency alert texts and village broadcasts, and evacuate promptly to designated shelters such as village halls if an evacuation order is issued."
