It was confirmed that Sergeant A, who was arrested on suspicion of falsely closing a missing-person report, checked location data not only when receiving the report for Jang, a woman in her 30s, but also when receiving the report for B, a man in his 60s who was another falsely closed missing person.
According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency on the 29th, after a missing-person report for B was filed at about 6:02 p.m. on the 2nd of last month, Sergeant A checked B's location information at least once.
However, about 5 hours and 30 minutes after the report was received, at about 11:38 p.m. the same day, Sergeant A closed the case, saying contact had been made with B. He also entered "whereabouts found" in the missing-person profiling system.
Afterward, when B's family could not reach B, they asked police for help again. The family refiled the missing-person report on the 21st, after media reports about the false closure of missing-person cases came out. B was found dead on the 22nd in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, one day after the refiling.
At about 6:43 p.m. on May 15, when the first missing-person report for Jang came in, Sergeant A also checked Jang's location a total of seven times.
At the time, Sergeant A closed the case about 2 hours and 30 minutes after the report was received, entered "death in traffic accident" in the missing-person profiling system, and deleted related data. After another missing-person report for Jang was filed on July 19, he checked the cellphone location a total of four times the following day.
The reason Sergeant A falsely closed the reports even after running location checks to determine the whereabouts of the two missing people remains unknown.
While falsely closing the missing-person reports for Jang and B, Sergeant A had claimed that contact had been made with the missing people. However, during questioning on the night of the 27th, he testified to the effect that his claim of having currency with the missing people was false and admitted part of the allegations.
Police said they have focused on determining a motive, analyzing testimony and other materials obtained by assigning profilers and conducting interviews starting immediately after Sergeant A's emergency arrest on the 22nd.
