After a missing-person report was closed as false and about 100 days later the body of a woman in her 30s, a person surnamed Jang, was found, police conducted a re-enactment at the scene as suspicions continued over her cause of death.
According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency on the 29th, police carried out an in-house test on the 27th at a palm farm in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, where Jang was found, to check whether hanging to death was physically possible.
Taking into account Jang's physical condition, police specifically checked whether the palm could bear a similar level of weight. Based on the experiment, police are said to have concluded that hanging to death at that location was not impossible.
Earlier, police said, based on an autopsy by the National Forensic Service and other findings, that Jang was presumed to have died by hanging from a palm.
During the on-site forensics, they also pulled directly on the palm trunk to check its strength and determined that the upper part of the tree had sufficient strength to support a person's weight.
However, some claim that actual hanging would be impossible because the palm farm where Jang was found is sparsely populated and dark at night, and the palm trunks are weak with many sharp parts. Jang's family and boyfriend also said Jang was afraid of that palm farm and did not visit it often.
