Judge Son was nominated to succeed former Supreme Court Justice Roh Tae-ak, who retired in March. Chief Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said at a briefing at Chunchugwan that day, "The fact that successive presidents and chief justices have reached nominations through prior consultations reflects the Constitution's intent to have each institution respect the other's authority," and added, "This nomination of a successor to the former justice Roh did not sufficiently satisfy procedural completeness."
