Some of the remains found in the studio apartment of a Chinese university lecturer suspected of killing a Chinese exchange student in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, have been identified as belonging to the missing student.
According to the Gyeongsan Police Station in North Gyeongsang on the 28th, the National Forensic Service conducted an autopsy in the morning on some of the remains recovered from the studio apartment of the suspect, a person surnamed Jeong, 31, in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan. By comparing them with fingerprints secured from the room, police confirmed the victim was A, a 25-year-old Chinese exchange student who died.
Police are conducting DNA tests to determine whether other body parts found in areas of Gyeongju and Gunpo, Gyeonggi, also belong to A. If necessary, they plan to carry out additional autopsies and tests.
The search to find the still-unrecovered remains of A will continue through the weekend. Police are also reviewing the possibility of additional crimes by Jeong by analyzing seized materials.
A police official said, "No additional charges have been confirmed so far, and we are keeping the possibility open as we proceed with the investigation."
Meanwhile, A's family entered Korea on the day and were reported to be coordinating the schedule and location to meet with police.
