As sloppy investigations into the Jang Yoon-gi case and the false closure of a Jeju missing-person case continued to surface, the Korean National Police Agency issued a special alert on public service discipline.
The Korean National Police Agency said it will issue a special alert for 10 days from the 28th to Oct. 6 for police officers nationwide and strengthen attendance and duty inspections.
During the special alert period, officers are urged to refrain from drinking, and all team dinners are strictly prohibited. Events should be postponed if possible or not held at all.
In addition, the Korean National Police Agency and city and provincial police agencies will hold at least one countermeasure meeting per day chaired by the station chief. Front-line police stations and mobile units will also hold one meeting daily.
The Korean National Police Agency said that if a breach of duty is detected, it will hold not only the person involved but also the manager strictly accountable.
The Korean National Police Agency human rights inspector, in a letter that day, said, "How a public official handles work can lead to issues of a fundamentally different nature than a simple mistake, depending on the result," and added, "To restore trust commensurate with our authority, we ask each police officer to make a joint effort with the mindset of representing the organization."
