Prosecutors sought one year and six months in prison for the mother of trot singer Jang Yoon-jung, a woman surnamed Yuk, 70, who was indicted and detained on charges of taking 31 million won from an acquaintance as an investment and embezzling it. Admitting all charges, Yuk said, "I was truly wrong," and shed tears in court.
On the 27th, the first court hearing for Yuk was held before Senior Judge Seo Beom-jun of the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 2 Single-Judge Panel.
Prosecutors said, "Yuk has a prior record of serving a prison sentence for a similar fraud scheme, and the amount of damage is not small," and asked for a sentence of one year and six months in prison.
According to prosecutors, from September 2024 to August 2025, Yuk used the fact that her daughter is a singer to deceive acquaintances and, on three occasions, embezzled a total of 31 million.
In 2018, Yuk was also detained for failing to repay about 400 million won borrowed from an acquaintance.
That day, Yuk's side fully admitted the charges.
In a final statement, Yuk's side said, "We acknowledge all the charges and deeply reflect on our wrongdoing," and added, "Even though there is a prior conviction from 2018 for a similar offense, we have no excuse whatsoever for committing this crime."
They continued, "However, regarding the motive, Yuk needed living expenses and credit card payments, which led to the crime, and most of the misappropriated funds were spent on living costs. We ask for one last measure of leniency in light of Yuk's poor health."
Yuk's sentencing hearing will be held on the 10th of next month.
