Minister Jung Sung-ho of the Ministry of Justice said on the 26th, "The claim that I offered to resign because of the burden of canceling (Lee Jae-myung the president's) indictment is groundless," adding, "If someone was indicted after an unlawful investigation, it is for prosecutors to judge."
Minister Jung met with reporters after a farewell ceremony held at the Ministry of Justice at the government complex in Gwacheon that day and said, "The National Assembly is discussing a special counsel, among other measures, and within the prosecution, there are voices of self-reflection that, in the process of converting to a public prosecution office and a serious crimes investigation office, past wrongful practices must be corrected."
He went on, "The Prosecutors' Committee for Respecting Human Rights and the Future (the prosecution's future committee) is looking into investigative processes that have raised public suspicion," adding, "We should discuss this properly afterward."
Asked whether many cases related to President Lee are included among those surveyed by the prosecution's future committee, he said, "Weren't there many problems with cases related to President Lee under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration?"
He added, "Because I am the Minister of the Ministry of Justice, I generally refrained from commenting to maintain objectivity and fairness," and said, "In the National Assembly's parliamentary investigation into President Lee's cases, it became clear to some extent that there were overreaching investigations. This is about addressing those parts."
Minister Jung said, "Because these are President Lee's cases, I want to make it clear that the prosecution's future committee was not formed for President Lee."
Within the Democratic Party, some are saying that once the regular National Assembly session opens in Sep., the "special counsel act to uncover the truth about fabricated investigations and fabricated indictments" (fabricated indictment special counsel act) should be handled swiftly. In response to related questions, Minister Jung said, "This is a matter that should be discussed in the National Assembly. It is not appropriate for the minister to offer a personal opinion."
