Police have launched a full-fledged investigation into a Chinese man in his 30s suspected of murder in connection with the case of a Chinese woman in her 20s studying abroad who went missing in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, and was later found dead.
According to the Gyeongsan Police Station on the 26th, beginning around 9 a.m. that day, police have been questioning an office worker surnamed Jeong, a Chinese national, about the motive and detailed circumstances of the crime.
Jeong was apprehended by police around 7:29 p.m. the previous day on a road in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan. After a crime scene reenactment and other procedures, Jeong was escorted to the Gyeongsan Police Station around 11:50 p.m. the same day.
Upon arriving at the police station, Jeong kept his head down and headed to the interrogation room without answering reporters' questions about the motive. Because Jeong arrived late at night, a separate suspect interview was reportedly not conducted overnight.
Based on the day's findings, police plan to seek an arrest warrant for Jeong.
An autopsy will also be conducted to determine the exact cause and time of death of the deceased, identified as A. The autopsy schedule is being coordinated, and once the procedure is completed, the body will be handed over to the bereaved family. Police said they also notified relatives living in other regions in Korea of A's death.
A and Jeong were reportedly acquainted from before. A, who was enrolled in a graduate program in the Gyeongsan area, was found dead inside Jeong's home on the 25th, five days after contact was lost.
Police are focusing their investigation on the timing and motive of the crime and the relationship between the two.
