A group that went from Gwangju, South Jeolla, to Cheonan, South Chungcheong, to commit a robbery after learning an acquaintance had a lot of money was caught by police.
The Cheonan Seobuk Police Station in South Chungcheong said on the 25th it arrested two people, including a person in their 40s identified as A, on charges of robbery resulting in injury. They are accused of breaking into an officetel in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan, around 10 a.m. on the 21st, threatening their acquaintance B with a weapon, and trying to steal cash and valuables.
An investigation found A and others learned that B, whom they knew like older and younger brothers, had a substantial amount of money and planned the crime to secure living expenses and more.
Living in Gwangju, they conducted advance reconnaissance of B's residence in Cheonan before the crime. On the day of the crime, they used a false identity to get inside the officetel, it was found.
However, B put up strong resistance, and they failed to take any cash or valuables. In the process, B was injured, and A and the others fled the scene.
Police traced the escape route using closed-circuit (CC)TV and other sources and arrested them the next day at their home and workplace in Gwangju. Authorities are currently conducting additional inquiries into the exact circumstances of the crime.
