An officer surnamed Bu (34), a sergeant at Jeju Seobu Police Station accused of falsely closing the case of Jang Mi-ran, who went missing in Jeju, has been arrested.
On the 25th, Lee Gil-beom, a warrant-judge chief judge at the Jeju District Court, issued an arrest warrant after conducting a pre-arrest suspect interrogation (substantive review of the warrant) for Sergeant Bu, who is accused of dereliction of duty; forgery and use of official electronic records; and obstructing the performance of official duties by deception. The judge said the warrant was issued "due to concerns about destruction of evidence and flight."
Sergeant Bu, who had been urgently arrested earlier, requested a detention validity review. The court granted the request and released Bu on the 24th, but Bu was arrested again a day later. Bu is accused of falsely closing the case by telling the reporter that Bu had "made contact" with Jang, who was reported missing in May, and of deleting Jang-related data from the management list of the missing-person profiling system.
Bu is also accused of falsely closing the missing case of a man in his 60s, Mr. A, received on the 2nd of last month, using a method similar to the Jang case. Police found the body of Mr. A in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, on the 22nd, and on the morning of the 24th also recovered a body believed to be Jang's in Hallim-eup, Jeju City.
