The number of missing-person cases handled by Sergeant A, who is accused of falsely closing the case of Jang Mi-ran, 37, who went missing in Jeju, reached 298.
Acting Commissioner Yoo Jae-seong of the Korean National Police Agency answered this way at a full meeting of the Public Administration and Security Committee on the 24th when Rep. Chae Hyun-il of the Democratic Party of Korea asked how many cases Sergeant A had handled.
Yoo, the acting commissioner, said, "While proceeding quickly with the investigation, we will make it clear through a full review whether there are (additional) such cases."
Sergeant A is accused of receiving a missing-person report for Jang in May and falsely closing the case, saying "we contacted the missing person." Sergeant A was found on the 2nd of last month to have falsely closed another missing-person case using a similar method.
Sergeant A was urgently arrested on the 22nd, but the Jeju District Court that day granted Sergeant A's request for a detention legality review. Sergeant A is expected to be investigated for the time being while released.
However, as prosecutors filed for an arrest warrant for Sergeant A that police had requested, the court plans to hold a pretrial detention hearing (substantial review of the warrant) to decide whether to detain Sergeant A.
