A warrant for arrest has been sought for an incumbent Jeju police officer who closed a case by making it look as if a missing person's safety had been confirmed, even though there had been no contact with the person.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency said on the 24th that it applied for an arrest warrant for Sergeant A on charges of dereliction of duty, falsifying and using electronic public records, and obstructing the performance of official duties by deceit. Police said they saw a risk of evidence destruction and flight.
Sergeant A is accused of closing a case on his own after lying that contact had been made with Jang Mi-ran, 37, who was reported missing in May, even though there had been no actual contact with the informant. It was found that Jang's data was also deleted from the missing-person profiling system's management list.
Sergeant A is also accused of falsely closing a missing-person report filed last month for B, in their 60s, by processing it as if contact had been made.
Jang has remained missing for more than three months, and police are conducting a full-scale search. The other missing person was found dead on the 22nd at a location in Jeju.
Police have booked Sergeant A and the case is under investigation to determine the exact circumstances.
