The attorney qualification of former People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong, whose prison sentence was finalized for receiving illegal political funds from the Unification Church, has been revoked.
According to legal sources on the 21st, the Korean Bar Association recently canceled the attorney registration of the former lawmaker. The association received an order from the Ministry of Justice on the 14th to cancel the former lawmaker's attorney registration. Under the Attorney‑at‑Law Act, a person whose sentence of imprisonment or heavier is finalized cannot be an attorney.
The former lawmaker was indicted on Jan. 6, 2022, ahead of the 20th presidential election, on charges of receiving 100 million won along with a request for support for the denomination by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration from former Unification Church World Headquarters Director Yun Yeong-ho. On the 16th of last month, the Supreme Court finalized a two-year prison sentence and a forfeiture of 100 million won.
