An undocumented foreign national who was being stopped by the Korea Coast Guard for not wearing a life jacket jumped into the sea to flee but was caught. Two more undocumented people hiding inside the vessel were additionally detected.
The Boryeong Maritime Police Station said on the 18th that it arrested three undocumented Vietnamese nationals on suspicion of violating the Immigration Act and handed them over to the immigration office for foreign nationals.
At about 11:30 a.m. on the 17th, while inspecting a 69-ton coastal jigging fishing vessel moving through Daecheon Port in Boryeong, the Korea Coast Guard found that a foreign crew member was not wearing a life jacket.
When the Korea Coast Guard demanded identification, a person in their 30s, A, refused and suddenly jumped into the sea to flee, but was eventually caught by the Korea Coast Guard. The Korea Coast Guard searched the interior of the vessel and additionally arrested two undocumented people in their 20s to 30s who were hiding on the aft deck and in a bedroom storeroom.
The investigation found that all of them had visas that expired before 2024, but they continued to stay and work in Korea. In particular, A was found to have overstayed for about seven years after a visa expired in 2019.
