Rain is forecast for most parts of the country from the 15th to the 17th during the Liberation Day holiday. In particular, torrential downpours of more than 150 mm are expected mainly along the southern coast and Jeju, requiring caution against flooding and landslides.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 14th, rain that begins in Jeju on the 15th will expand to the southern regions from the afternoon. In the central regions, some places will see showers between the afternoon and evening. From the early morning of the 16th, the rain will spread to most parts of the country and will gradually stop from the night of the 17th.
Expected rainfall on the 15th–16th is 50–100 mm in Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang; 30–80 mm in Gwangju, South Jeolla, North Jeolla, Daegu, North Gyeongsang, and Jeju; and 20–60 mm in the Chungcheong region. In the greater Seoul area and inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, 5–30 mm of rain is expected.
In particular, more than 150 mm of rain may pour down along the southern coast of South Gyeongsang, near Jirisan Mountain, and in the mountainous areas of Jeju, and more than 120 mm along the southern coast of South Jeolla and near Jirisan Mountain. On the 16th, heavy rain of 30–50 mm per hour is also possible mainly in these areas.
As the rain falls, the heat wave will ease somewhat. On the 15th, morning lows are expected to be 20–25 C, with daytime highs of 27–32 C. On the 16th, daytime highs will drop to 24–30 C. On the 17th, morning lows of 21–25 C and daytime highs of 27–31 C are expected.
However, until the rain begins, the sweltering heat will continue. Through the daytime of the 15th, apparent temperatures in the greater Seoul area, South Chungcheong, and the southern regions may rise to around 33 C. Some urban areas and coasts may also see tropical nights.
Strong winds and high waves are also expected at sea. From the morning of the 16th, winds will blow strong over the South Sea and the waters around Jeju, and waves are expected to rise to as high as 3 meters.
The Korea Meteorological Administration urged people in areas of heavy rain to avoid approaching rivers and valleys and to be mindful of low-lying flooding, landslides, and lightning.
