A teenage high school student riding a motorcycle without a helmet and without a license plate died after fleeing a police order to stop and crashing into a parked vehicle.
According to police and fire authorities on the 12th, at about 9:07 a.m. that day, on a road in Daehung-ri, Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, high school student A, who was riding a motorcycle, crossed the centerline and struck a passenger car parked on the opposite-side sidewalk.
A suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital in cardiac arrest but died.
The crash occurred as A fled after not complying with a stop order from a police officer on patrol. The officer saw A driving a motorcycle without a helmet and without a license plate and said, "Please pull over to the right."
However, A did not stop and fled about 500 meters along a two-lane one-way road. A patrol car followed, but police, considering the risk of a crash, are understood to have halted the pursuit and proceeded slowly.
A then fled about another 500 meters and crashed about 1 kilometer from the initial stop location.
Police are checking the distance between the patrol car and the motorcycle, the point at which the pursuit was halted, and the driving conditions at the time of the crash.
Because the police officer who drove the patrol car is a witness in this crash, police are also considering transferring the case to a police station other than the Yangpyeong Police Station to ensure objectivity in the investigation.
A police official said, "We are verifying the exact circumstances of the crash based on vehicle dashcam footage and nearby closed-circuit (CC)TV."
