Foreign media reported that the boom in artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors is changing the standing of engineers at Korea's memory semiconductor corporations such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix in the marriage market. With performance bonuses worth hundreds of millions of won expected, one example noted that some employees even hesitate to reveal their workplace on a first meeting.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said on the 10th (local time) that Korea's AI Semiconductor boom is affecting dating and marriage culture, and it focused on the elevated social status of engineers at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
WSJ introduced the case of an unmarried man in his 30s who works in the memory semiconductor institutional sector at Samsung Electronics. He wants a serious relationship but said he is debating whether to disclose his workplace on a first date. With strong company earnings expected to bring a large performance bonus, he said it is hard to judge whether the other person's interest is in him or in his financial means.
The outlet analyzed that as AI data centers proliferate, demand for memory semiconductors including high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has surged, significantly boosting the income and asset-building capacity of employees at Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. It explained that this change is also affecting society's assessment of the profession.
It also said the view in the marriage information industry has changed. In the past, employees of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix were often rated a notch below traditional professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and accountants as potential spouses, but recently they have risen to a similar level.
WSJ noted that Korean pop culture is reflecting this shift. It cited scenes from a recent dating reality show where, when the job of Samsung Electronics engineer was revealed, female contestants' interest converged, and from "SNL Korea," where the attitude of a luxury store clerk changes after the person reveals being an SK hynix employee.
Behind this phenomenon is improved corporate performance driven by the AI Semiconductor boom. WSJ reported that as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix post record results, employees are expected to receive large performance bonuses, and that this cash inflow is influencing the young generation's asset formation, including securing dwellings and marriage.
The outlet also introduced people who left the semiconductor industry and now regret missing the boom, as well as cases of households that improved their housing standards with a spouse working at a semiconductor company. It also reported that among some employees, meetings with coworkers at the same company are increasing compared with blind dates arranged outside.
WSJ assessed that as the AI industry grows and the economic influence of Korean semiconductor corporations expands, the valuation of engineers is changing not only in professional terms but also in the dating and marriage market.
