After Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) demanded that homeless people living at the airport leave, related human rights groups pushed back.
According to the homeless rights group "Homeless Action" on the 9th, Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) attached eviction notices to the belongings of homeless people inside the airport on the 30th of last month.
The notice said to immediately stop homeless activity and leave the passenger terminal. It also warned that those who do not comply with the eviction demand could face fines, detention, administrative fines, or criminal punishment under the Airport Facilities Act.
The exact number of homeless people living at Incheon Airport has not been confirmed. However, it was found that some homeless people who felt pressure to leave received emergency housing assistance with help from Homeless Action.
Joo Jang-uk, a standing activist with Homeless Action, said, "Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) should withdraw the hastily pursued eviction measure and fulfill its responsibility as a public institution," and added, "Incheon City, which has effectively disregarded establishing a support system for street homeless people, should also come up with countermeasures."
Homeless Action plans to hold a press conference at Incheon Airport on the 12th to demand a halt to the eviction measure.
