A high school student who was seriously injured while helping the victimized high school girl in the "Jang Yun-gi case" was recognized as an injured righteous person by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
According to materials submitted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to the office of Kwon Chil-seung (Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi, District Byeong) of the Democratic Party of Korea on the 7th, high school student A was recognized as an injured righteous person at the review committee for persons of merit held on the 24th of last month.
On May 5, A heard the screams of the late Lee Chae-won near a pedestrian path by a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and was stabbed and injured by a weapon wielded by Jang Yun-gi while attempting a rescue.
A month after the incident, Gwangsan-gu, in consultation with the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, secured investigative materials and medical opinions proving A's rescue efforts at the time and requested a review by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
A person of merit is someone who, regardless of their job, dies or is injured while performing a rescue act to save another person's life, body, or property in danger, and can be designated after a review by the ministry.
Depending on the extent of the injuries, A is recognized as a grade-9 injured righteous person and will receive national honors and support.
