Two police officers became suspects on charges of leaking investigation information about an on-duty officer's "drunk hit-and-run case."
According to the legal community and police on the 7th, Daegu Dongbu Police Station conducted searches and seizures the previous day at three locations—Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency, Suseong Police Station, and Gosan Police Precinct—to investigate allegations of leaking investigation information about Officer A's drunk hit-and-run case.
Last month in a residential area of Suseong District, Daegu, A drove after drinking and crashed into a parked car. A was said to have left the scene and left the wife's mobile phone number on the damaged vehicle.
The day after the crash, A's father contacted Officer B of the Gosan Police Precinct, with whom he had a personal relationship, and asked him to check on the investigation. B then contacted C of the Suseong Police Station, and C identified the status of the investigation through the junior officer in charge and relayed it.
It was the day when acting commissioner Yoo Jae-seong apologized and promised measures to prevent a recurrence over alleged shoddy investigation and collusion related to the "high school girl murder" case of Jang Yun-gi at the Korean National Police Agency.
However, B and others continued calls for three days, sharing investigation information in real time. Based on this, A reportedly even had the wife appear at the police station as if she were the actual driver. But upon hearing that there was eyewitness testimony, A eventually appeared at the police station and confessed.
Daegu Dongbu Police Station also booked B and C on charges of leaking official secrets and removed them from their posts. A's father, who was involved in the process of leaking investigation information, was also placed among those surveyed.
A was also removed from the post and is being investigated without detention on suspicion of a drunk hit-and-run. Police are also looking into indications that A attempted to swap drivers and whether to apply the charge of aiding and abetting a suspect's escape, and the matter is under investigation.
