Seoul Grand Park said on the 7th it provided "customized summer special meals" to animals tired from the heat.
The special meals were provided to prevent stress in animals caused by the heat wave and to guard against weakened immunity. A total of 930 kilograms of customized diets rich in moisture and nutrients—such as fruit, vegetables and seafood—were provided to 16 animal houses, including the No. 1 Africa House.
The special meals were selected with the animals' nutritional balance and behavioral enrichment in mind. The Siberian tiger (predator house) received live carp to recharge vitality and encourage wild underwater hunting behavior, and beef shank bone to supplement protein. The Asiatic black bear (bear house) received beef shank bone and fruits and vegetables to ease heat stress and supply vitamins.
In addition, the Asian elephant (large animal house) took a loess bath using the "Companion Fund" and donations formed through citizens' interest. At the No. 2 Africa House, the Barbary sheep received a mud bath, and the hippopotamus received seasonal fruit.
In addition, for the Japanese macaque (children's zoo), ice and fruits and vegetables were provided in the pond inside its dedicated enclosure.
Park Jin-sun, head of Seoul Grand Park, said, "We will help the animals spend the summer healthier than ever by supplying customized nutrients to those exhausted by high temperatures and encouraging activities that bring out their wildness," adding, "We will continue to prioritize animal welfare and make ongoing efforts."
