Baek Seung-joo, former deputy director of the Democratic Research Institute, and Yoon Nan-sil, former secretary for institutional reform at the Presidential Office, were nominated as vice mayors of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Gwangju City had planned to appoint a Vice Minister-level vice mayor through a citizen recommendation process, but in the end, a member from Min Hyung-bae's mayoral transition committee was selected.
Hwang Gi-yeon, chair of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Personnel Committee, said in the briefing room at the Gwangju government complex on the 6th that "Min Hyung-bae, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City mayor, nominated Baek Seung-joo for industry, jobs, economy, labor, and advanced flagship industries, and Yoon Nan-sil for citizen sovereignty, youth population policy, health and welfare, and gender equality."
Nominee Baek Seung-joo has built a wide range of experience in the party and on the policy research front. In particular, on the Jeonnam-Gwangju Great Transition Planning Committee, which served as Min's de facto transition committee, Baek served as vice chair. Baek will be in charge of the industrial economy fields, including industry, jobs, economy, labor, and advanced flagship industries.
Nominee Yoon Nan-sil has served as secretary for institutional reform at the Presidential Office and has been active in civil society in the region. On Min's transition committee, Yoon served as Chairperson of the Citizen Sovereignty Committee. Yoon will oversee citizen sovereignty, youth population policy, health and welfare, and gender equality.
The two nominated candidates are expected to undergo confirmation hearings at the special city council and be officially appointed within the month.
