With the peak vacation season underway, a crackdown on drunken driving in Jeju uncovered 481 cases over two months. More than half were found to be at the license-revocation level of extreme intoxication.
Jeju Provincial Police Agency said on Aug. 6 that it detected a total of 481 cases in a focused crackdown on drunken driving from June 1 to July 31, centered on beaches and tourist sites.
By case type, license revocation (blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher) accounted for 245 cases, or 50.9% of the total, while license suspension (0.03% or higher to under 0.08%) was 236 cases (49.1%).
Police also caught two habitual drunken drivers and seized two vehicles.
In fact, on the evening of July 23, near Hamdeok Beach in Jeju City, driver A was caught driving with a blood alcohol concentration at the license-revocation level. On June 27, a drunken driver at the license-revocation level was also stopped near the Sagye coast.
It was also confirmed that on July 29, on a road in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, a 40-something administrative officer affiliated with Jeju Police Station was caught driving under the influence at the license-suspension level.
Jeju police plan to continue the focused crackdown around beaches and tourist attractions through Sept. 30 to prevent drunken driving during the vacation season.
