Former professional gamer-turned-internet broadcaster (BJ) Cheol-gu (real name Lee Ye-jun) is under police investigation on suspicion of a scam worth about 6 billion won.
Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency said on the 4th that it assigned Lee's case, filed on suspicion of fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, to the anti-corruption and economic crime investigation unit and began an investigation.
The complainants are another internet broadcaster who had streamed with Lee and an affiliated corporation. They reportedly claimed that Lee borrowed a large sum while hiding or deceiving the fact that Lee lacked the ability to repay.
The amount of damage the complainants claim is about 6 billion won.
Based on the complaint and the complainants' statements, police plan to verify the facts and then summon Lee to question Lee about the circumstances and fund transaction details.
After working as a professional StarCraft gamer, Lee switched to being an internet broadcaster and gained popularity. As allegations of a large debt surfaced recently, on the 27th of last month Lee admitted to traveling to the Philippines for gambling on the internet broadcasting platform SOOP.
Lee said, "Since the year before last, I have gone to the Philippines for gambling, and the situation was so serious that I spent about 1 billion won a week on gambling," adding, "I couldn't handle it, so I used illegal private loans, and as I kept robbing Peter to pay Paul, the situation got worse." Lee added, "I will turn myself in to the police."
