Two officers at Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station have been indicted on charges including leaking investigation information to the father of Jang Yun-gi, a serving police officer, and aiding the destruction of evidence while currently investigating the case of "high school girl killer" Jang Yun-gi.
According to legal sources on the 3rd, the Gwangju District Prosecutors Office indicted without bail Park, an inspector who heads the violent crimes team at Gwangsan Police Station, on charges including leaking official secrets, instigating the destruction of evidence, aiding the destruction of evidence, and aiding the concealment of evidence. Team member Sergeant A was indicted without detention.
They are accused of conspiring, while investigating the Jang Yun-gi case, to return Jang's sport-utility vehicle (SUV) containing cable ties, a key piece of evidence in the crime, to Jang's father. They are also accused of finding two sex dolls with major parts damaged during a search and seizure of Jang's residence but leaving them without seizing them, and of giving Jang's father the home address and front-door passcode so he could damage or discard them.
Inspector Park also allegedly told Jang's father where Jang had discarded his cellphone and instructed a member of the investigative team to delete video recorded during the vehicle search and seizure, according to the indictment.
Sergeant A is also accused of repeatedly informing Jang's father about plans to seek an arrest warrant for Jang and about the seizure of his cellphone.
Earlier, police referred the case on evidence destruction charges, but prosecutors changed the charge to instigating evidence destruction, citing a Supreme Court precedent that evidence destruction does not apply when a person destroys evidence for their own benefit.
Prosecutors plan to continue the investigation to verify any accomplice relationships.
