A police official who was investigating an arson case at an apartment management office in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang, that left three people dead last month, was found dead.
According to police on the 3rd, at about 4:30 p.m. on the previous day, Inspector A, in their 50s and assigned to the criminal division of the Gyeongsan Police Station, was found dead in a wooded hill in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang. Inspector A was the head of the investigation team for the arson case.
No criminal suspicion has been identified so far. The Changnyeong Police Station with jurisdiction is investigating the exact cause of death.
Inspector A had been investigating the arson at the management office of an apartment complex in Sadong, Gyeongsan, that occurred on the 23rd. At the time, a resident, a person surnamed Ryu, 71, set fire to the management office, killing the management director, an accounting staff member, and a resident, and injuring five people including Ryu.
Immediately after the incident, the North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency formed a dedicated 36-member task force including the metropolitan crime investigation unit, the forensic science division, and the criminal team of the Gyeongsan Police Station, and launched an investigation. Police booked Ryu on suspicion of arson of an occupied building causing death or injury and are investigating the circumstances and motive.
