In Pohang, North Gyeongsang, a series of water-related accidents occurred in the sea and a reservoir, leaving two people dead and one person transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest.
According to the Pohang Maritime Police Station and others on Aug. 2, at about 8:07 a.m. a report came in that, in the sea near Cheongjin-ri, Cheongha-myeon, Buk-gu, Pohang, a woman in her 80s who is a haenyeo identified as A dived to harvest sea urchins and did not come back to the surface.
The Korea Coast Guard deployed a rescue team and other personnel to search, and about 20 minutes later, at around 8:30 a.m., found A in cardiac arrest and transported her to a hospital.
Earlier, at about 1:47 a.m. the same day, a report was filed with fire authorities that acquaintances who had gone fishing had disappeared at a reservoir in Gigye-myeon, Buk-gu, Pohang.
Fire authorities conducted an underwater search and found two people, including a man in his 60s, in about an hour, but both were dead.
Police said that, so far, there are no indications of a crime and that they are investigating the exact circumstances of the accidents.
