A hearing to determine the validity of an arrest warrant will be held for the former head of the criminal division at Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, who is suspected of exerting improper influence during the handling of the case of "Jeonnam Gwangju high school girl murder suspect" Jang Yun-gi, 23. This is the second time.
According to the Korean National Police Agency's "special investigation team for fact-finding related to the Jang Yun-gi case" on the 29th, the Gwangju District Court will hold a warrant validity review at 11 a.m. on the 31st for Inspector A, who was then the head of the criminal division at Gwangsan Station and is suspected of abuse of authority and dereliction of duty.
Inspector A is suspected of exerting improper influence during command of the investigation into the Jang Yun-gi case to apply a simple murder charge instead of murder with intent to rape, which carries a minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
The investigation team previously sought an arrest warrant for Inspector A, but the court rejected it. At the time, the bench reportedly found that there was room to dispute the allegations and judged it difficult to recognize the need and reasonableness for detention.
Afterward, the investigation team summoned those involved for additional questioning and analyzed seized materials before reapplying for an arrest warrant.
