Soonchunhyang University was found late to have admitted 11 more first-year medical students than its quota this year and will face sanctions from the Ministry of Education.
According to the Ministry of Education and others on the 27th, the Soonchunhyang University medical school admitted 113 students through early and regular admissions for the 2026 academic year. That is 11 more than the quota of 102.
In an additional recruitment process in February, the Soonchunhyang University medical school contacted additional successful candidates to check whether they would enroll, but it said a staff error led to registering 11 more students even though enrollment had already ended and there were no vacancies.
The issue came to light as the Ministry of Education reviewed each university's quotas and actual admissions after this year's freshman intake was finalized. Soonchunhyang University explained to the Ministry of Education that it was an "administrative mistake."
Under relevant rules, the Ministry of Education notified the university to reduce the 2028 academic year medical school admissions by 11 from the existing quota. However, the Ministry of Education said there would be no separate disadvantages for students who have already enrolled.
