Heat will continue mainly in the southern regions tomorrow, Tuesday. Daytime highs will soar to 38 degrees.
On the 27th, the Korea Meteorological Administration said the heat wave would continue on the 28th, with highs rising to 38 degrees or higher in South Jeolla, Daegu, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang.
In particular, a severe heat wave alert was issued for Gyeongsan, Cheongdo, Goryeong, Pohang, and Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang, and Yangsan, Changwon, Gimhae, Miryang, Uiryeong, Haman, Changnyeong, Jinju, and central Hapcheon in South Gyeongsang.
A severe heat wave alert is issued when the daily maximum apparent temperature of 35 degrees or higher persists for two or more days and the apparent temperature reaches 38 degrees or higher, or when the high is expected to be 39 degrees or higher.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety also raised the heat wave disaster alert level to "serious" as of 3 p.m. that day and activated the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters with Minister Yoon Ho-jung as head.
Forecast lows and highs for major cities are 26 and 33 degrees in Seoul, 25 and 32 in Incheon, 26 and 34 in Daejeon and Gwangju, 25 and 38 in Daegu, 26 and 36 in Ulsan, and 26 and 35 in Busan.
Minister Yoon said, "During the hot midday hours, drink plenty of water and take breaks," adding, "In areas where a severe heat wave alert has been issued, please stop outdoor activities."
Meanwhile, scattered showers are expected from early morning to afternoon in the Seoul metropolitan area, central and southern Gangwon, central and northern North Chungcheong, and central and northern North Gyeongsang. Expected precipitation is 5 to 40 millimeters.
