At a beach in Goseong County, Gangwon, two soldiers in their 50s who dove into rough waters to save brothers who had fallen into the sea lost their lives in a tragic accident.
According to the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Fire Headquarters and the Sokcho Korea Coast Guard on the 27th, at about 2:10 p.m. on the 26th, 14- and 17-year-old brothers who were enjoying the water at Hwajinpo Beach in Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong County, Gangwon, fell into the water.
The brothers' father and two soldiers in their 50s at the scene, who witnessed the emergency, immediately jumped into the sea to save the children. The teenage brothers and their father safely made it back to shore, and all were reported to be out of life-threatening danger.
However, the two soldiers who assisted in the rescue could not overcome the strong waves and were swept away. The Korea Coast Guard and civilian rescuers, dispatched after a report, pulled them from the water, but they were transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest and were ultimately pronounced dead.
The Korea Coast Guard is determining the exact circumstances of the accident.
