A Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office investigator who fled overseas after allegations of a jeonse scam surfaced and was later caught and extradited to Korea has been arrested.
According to legal sources on the 24th, Suwon District Court senior judge Kim Hong-seop issued an arrest warrant for a suspect identified only as A on fraud charges after holding a pretrial detention hearing, saying there was a risk of flight.
A is accused of owning more than 70 units, including residential officetels, in the Dongtan New Town area of Hwaseong and, since September last year, failing to return deposits to tenants whose jeonse contracts had expired.
There have been 25 complaints tallied so far, with damages amounting to 3 billion won.
Facing potential lawsuits over the jeonse scam, A filed for leave from the prosecution in September last year and fled to the Philippines. A was arrested by local police at a hideout in Cebu in April this year and was extradited to Korea on the 21st of this month.
Hwaseong Dongtan Police Station plans to question A in custody about the specific details of the crimes and whether there were any accomplices.
