The Korean National Police Agency said on the 22nd that it has appointed world-renowned pro gamer Faker, Lee Sang-hyeok, 30, as an honorary police officer and ambassador to prevent online gambling.
Police said Lee Sang-hyeok was appointed an honorary police officer with the rank of "sergeant," the same as officers hired through career-competitive recruitment for cyber investigations, considering that he is an esports player with high recognition at home and abroad who has a positive influence on teenagers.
Going forward, Lee Sang-hyeok plans to encourage youth participation by joining the Korean National Police Agency's production of promotional videos and posters for the "youth online gambling self-reporting system."
The Korean National Police Agency has been operating the youth online gambling self-reporting system since May 18 and through Aug. 31. As of the 16th, a total of 806 self-reports had been received.
Yoo Jae-seong, acting commissioner of the Korean National Police Agency, said, "For youth online gambling, it is important to detect it before the problem deepens and begin counseling and treatment quickly," adding, "We hope the positive influence of Faker will give courage to teenagers in need to report without hesitation."
Lee Sang-hyeok said, "I am honored to be appointed as an honorary police officer and ambassador, and I feel a great sense of responsibility," adding, "I will actively take part in ambassador activities, including widely publicizing to teenagers the dangers of online gambling and the self-reporting system."
