Two Indonesian crew members fell while trying to escape from their lodging, killing one and seriously injuring the other.
According to the Sasang Police Station in Busan on the 21st, at about 3:28 a.m. that day, two Indonesian men in their 20s and 30s fell out of a window from the eighth floor of a motel located in Busan's Sasang District.
At the time, they tore the blankets in the room into long strips, tied them together into an improvised rope, hung it out the window, and tried to climb down. But they lost their balance and fell about 21 meters straight to the ground.
From the impact, the man in his 20s died at the scene, and the man in his 30s who was with him suffered severe injuries across his body and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Investigators believe they were trying to flee to avoid boarding a ship, remain in Korea illegally, and find separate jobs.
The investigation found that 20 foreign nationals in total were staying as a group in two rooms of the lodging, 10 in each room. In particular, it was revealed that the door to the room they were using had been locked from the outside with a padlock by a labor placement agency official. Having entered the country just the day before to work as crew, they were temporarily staying at the motel while waiting before moving to another area.
Police who responded to the scene took the remaining 18 foreign nationals who had stayed in the room to the station for protection. They are also determining the specific circumstances of the accident.
