A detention warrant hearing for the then head of the criminal division at Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, who investigated the "Jang Yoon-gi case," will be held on the 21st.
According to police on the 17th, the Gwangju District Court will hold a pretrial detention hearing (warrant review) at 11 a.m. on the 21st for a superintendent surnamed Park, who is suspected of abuse of authority and dereliction of duty.
Superintendent Park, who was in the command line overseeing the investigation of the Jang Yoon-gi case, is suspected of exerting a certain level of influence in the decision-making process to apply a simple murder charge to Jang Yoon-gi instead of murder with intent to rape.
The Korean National Police Agency special investigation team is also looking into whether Superintendent Park was involved in the process of investigating Jang Yoon-gi's past stalking case and the murder case separately instead of consolidating them.
The Korean National Police Agency special investigation team arrested and sent to prosecutors a lieutenant surnamed Park, who was the investigation team leader in the Jang Yoon-gi case, on charges including destruction of evidence. A senior superintendent general surnamed Kim, who was then the chief of Gwangsan Police Station, has also been booked on the same charge of abuse of authority to obstruct the exercise of rights and is under investigation.
