Director Na Hong-jin's new film "Hope" topped the box office from its first day in theaters, drawing more than 330,000 moviegoers. It is the best performance among this year's releases.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC)'s integrated box office computer network on the 16th, Hope drew 333,899 moviegoers to theaters in a single day on the 15th, its official opening day. It ranked No. 1 at the box office. Including advance events, total cumulative admissions reached 351,257.
This is the highest figure among all films released in Korea this year. It easily surpassed the performance of Colony (199,762), which had held this year's top record until just before.
The outlook for its box-office run also looks bright. As of 7 a.m. that day, Hope's real-time advance reservations stood at 561,751 moviegoers (63.6% booking share). Earlier, Hope rose to No. 1 in advance booking rate at the fastest pace among this year's releases and set the highest pre-sale volume.
Hope follows Beom-seok, the Branch Office head of Hopo Port located in the Demilitarized Zone, who hears from local young men that a tiger has appeared and then faces an unbelievable reality in the village.
